Katie Lane

PRocess

Influenced by local New England architecture, culture, food, colors and textures, Lane works in a reactively rigorous subtractive and additive process. Building up and then sanding, sawing, cutting and beating down dense indulgent applications of paint, medium and other industrial materials, the process is often evident in the final work. Through exposed layers and paint filled caverns her commanding use of material and abandonment of traditional method is woven into an overall aesthetic that marries the techniques of both painting and sculpture. Sometimes rough, other times more labored over the result – vibrant, colorful, quirky, sometimes humorous dimensional paintings each uniquely defined by its own act of creation.
